Veteran Reliever Joins Chicago’s Playoff Push
In a significant move on the MLB trade deadline day, the Chicago Cubs acquired veteran right-handed relief pitcher Andrew Kittredge from the Baltimore Orioles. The trade, which was announced on July 31, 2025, sees the Cubs add a proven high-leverage arm to their bullpen as they battle for the National League Central title. In return, the Orioles received a promising minor league prospect, infielder Wilfri De La Cruz. For the Cubs, Kittredge brings a wealth of experience and a track record of success, including an All-Star selection in 2021. The 35-year-old right-hander has been a dependable arm this season, posting a 3.45 ERA over 31 games. His ability to induce ground balls and his slider, which has an impressive vertical drop, make him a valuable addition to a bullpen that has been inconsistent at times this season.
A New Chapter and a Look at Kittredge’s Contract
For Andrew Kittredge, the trade marks a new chapter in his career after a brief stint with the Baltimore Orioles. He had signed a one-year, $9 million contract with the Orioles in the offseason, a deal that included a $9 million club option for the 2026 season with a $1 million buyout. The Cubs will now assume that contract and have the option to bring him back for the 2026 season. Prior to his time in Baltimore, Kittredge spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays and the St. Louis Cardinals, where he had a career-best season in 2024. The trade is a clear signal that the Cubs are all-in on making a deep postseason run, as they have been one of the most active teams at the trade deadline.
